Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

This lesson about marketing will spark a lot of discussion among students. Learners will also watch a video about word-of-mouth marketing and learn and practise useful collocations

COLLOCATIONS

The lesson starts with a short brainstorming session. Students discuss what one might do in certain situations, such as having to find a good dentist. Then, students need to match sentence halves. The sentences contain the target collocations (e.g. carefully consider, of poor quality, encourage someone to do something). To make sure that students understand the collocation, the teacher might ask some concept-checking questions. The teacher’s version of the pdf as well as in the speaker comments in the e-lesson plan. The collocations are later used throughout this lesson about marketing. After that, students choose three of the statements and explain why they agree or don’t agree with them. Next, students discuss some questions about marketing. They also read a definition of the idiom by word of mouth and try to explain what word-of-mouth marketing might be.

VIDEO & SPEAKING

In this part of the lesson about marketing, students watch the first part of the video and compare their answers. While watching the second part, they need to tick the ideas that are mentioned in the video. Next, students have a discussion about word-of-mouth marketing and what they have learned from the video. After that students read about five word-of-mouth marketing strategies and discuss whether the strategies might be successful and result in more clients. The teacher can also ask students if they have heard of situations where businesses did something unusual or funny and which resulted in people talking about them. Finally, students look at the strategies again and discuss if they could be used for listed businesses (e.g. language app, vet clinic, fitness studio). Students also brainstorm other ways to make people talk about these businesses.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson about marketing includes an additional vocabulary task that you can use as homework or revision. It’s available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
