LESSON OVERVIEW

This flipped classroom worksheet is based on a TED talk by Barry Schwartz who tries to answer the question why we work and what makes us satisfied at work. It is prepared for B2 (upper-intermediate) students.

This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

First, in the pre-class activities, students need to complete phrases from the video with prepositions. After that, they watch the video and check their answers. The next task focuses on three words and expressions: a reward, to incentivize and to make a living. Students have to study provided questions and match the new vocabulary with meanings. Finally, they have to answer these questions in writing.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The in-class activities involve mainly discussion. In the first exercise, students get two statements from the video and they have to comment on them. They should tell whether they agree or disagree with these sentences and explain why. Next, in their own words, students say what it means for them when work is challenging, engaging, stimulating and meaningful.

Then, they move to the list of aspects which motivate people to work. They have to choose 5 which motivate them most and explain their choice. At the end, they can compare their answers with the research findings presented in the graph. Do not skip this part of the lesson plan as it is quite interesting in terms of differences between people’s choice of the most motivating aspects.
