LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this first lesson for A1 learners are to:

• learn useful classroom language and instruction words;
• listen to and practise basic dialogues and greetings;
• practise asking about and spelling names.

Get to know your elementary students with this first lesson for A1 English learners! Students learn useful words for classroom instructions (e.g. look, read, write). They listen to and practise dialogues with basic phrases (How are you?, I’m great!). They practise spelling their names and do various tasks to show understanding, e.g. matching, ‘true or false’ exercises, completing sentences. They also learn phrases to say goodbye (e.g. See you!)

Warm-Up And Recordings

This first lesson for A1 learners begins with a warm-up. To learn basic classroom language, students repeat words and phrases after you (e.g. listen to, look at). Next, students read some tasks on their own. Then, they listen to you reading out the tasks and do them to show understanding (e.g. Look at your teacher). After that, students listen to some dialogues and match them with pictures of emojis (e.g. How are you today? I’m OK). Then, students read the dialogues in pairs. 

MORE PRACTICE

This first lesson for A1 learners continues with some varied tasks. Students listen to recordings in which people introduce themselves and spell their names. Students have to choose the words they hear. Then, students practise spelling their own names and other names. Then, they read some examples of worksheet activities (matching, choosing, and completing) and do tasks that elicit the same skills (e.g. matching sentences with pictures, choosing the correct name, completing the phrase). Next, they match questions with the answers (e.g. What’s your surname? – It’s Adkin). Then, students work in pairs to ask and answer some questions, revising what they’ve learned so far. After that, they show their understanding of ‘true’ and ‘false’ by completing sentences with true or false information. The first lesson for A1 learners finishes by teaching students different phrases to use at the end of the lesson (e.g. Have a nice day!).

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students need to complete a crossword puzzle using the missing words. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
