LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about autumn, students learn collocations related to autumn as well as functional phrases to talk about their favourite things. Students also watch a video and have a discussion. 

WARM-UP & VOCABULARY

The lesson about autumn starts with a warm-up. Students look at two pictures (a group of hikers and a person sunbathing on a beach) and discuss what people who don’t like summer might say about these pictures. Then, students look at the comments and complete them with missing words. Students also compare their ideas with these comments. They also work with collocations and complete them with some nouns from the comments (e.g. hiking/forest trail, pumpkin/homemade pie, indoor/outdoor activity, etc.). After that, students put it into practice and answer questions with the collocations. They also look at a few sentences that compare two seasons and complete them with either ‘summer’ or ‘autumn’. Then, they come up with more sentences to compare the two seasons. 

VIDEO & PHRASES TO TALK ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS

In this part of the lesson about autumn, students watch a video and learn some useful phrases. First, students brainstorm things that people love about autumn. Then, they watch the video and compare their ideas. They also complete the sentence ‘What I love about autumn/fall is…’ with three things from the video they agree with. After that, students watch the video again and complete the sentences (e.g. My favourite thing about fall is…; One of the really great things about fall is the temperature; Fall is my number one season; etc.) with missing words. Then, students practise the phrases by doing two activities. First, they read some statements and choose the correct words. Then, they guess what the statements are about. Finally, students look at different categories and describe their favourite things without mentioning what they are. Others have to guess what they are talking about. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson about autumn also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the phrases from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
