LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about Halloween, students talk about different activities and costumes. They also watch a video about a celebrity and her funny costume, brainstorm other costumes and discuss questions about Halloween. 

This is a Speaking Class worksheet. It includes a variety of tasks that let your students practise their speaking skills. This lesson format does not focus on grammar or vocabulary. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP & VIDEO

This lesson about Halloween starts with a warm-up. Students look at different activities (e.g. watching horror films, throwing themed parties, creating costumes, decorating houses, etc.) and share what they like and dislike about Halloween. Students also talk about their experiences doing these activities. Then, they move on to a discussion about Halloween’s origins and talk more about costumes (e.g. if people wear costumes for Halloween where students live, what inspires them, crazy costumes, etc.). After that, students have activities related to the video with a model Heidi Klum’s costume. First, they look at the saying (An early bird catches the worm) and brainstorm ideas on what kind of costume could the saying inspire the model to wear. Next,  students watch the video and check their ideas. They also complete the statements to express their opinion about the costume.

MORE DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson about Halloween, students continue talking about costumes. First, they read the descriptions of some other costumes Heidi Klum wore for Halloween. Students answer questions about the costumes and/or try to imagine what Heidi Klum would say about them. After that, students look at four sayings (e.g. Rome wasn’t built in a day or An apple a day keeps the doctor away) and brainstorm ideas on how to illustrate them with Halloween costumes. To wrap up this lesson about Halloween, students have a discussion. They choose a category (e.g. trends, psychology and costumes, DIY, etc.) and answer the questions (e.g. Can a costume be offensive? or Do you think a choice of a costume can say anything about someone’s personality?).
