LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson with a focus on the theme of altruism and generosity are to:

• learn and practise basic collocations with ‘give’;
• discuss various ways to take charitable actions and the motivations behind them; 
• practise listening skills with an authentic video.

Students engage in a deep discussion on varied perspectives on giving. They reflect on their personal experiences and express their opinions on the different forms of giving. They also explore different charitable activities and watch a social campaign video that sparks conversation about the importance of giving. Additionally, students have the chance to read and engage in discussions related to influencers, exploring popularity, motivations, and opinions on publicized acts of generosity.

WARM-UP

This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students talk about their recent experiences related to an act of kindness. Subsequently, students practise using basic collocations with ‘give’ in different contexts. Following a reinforcement of vocabulary, they express their opinions on statements related to giving, fostering a class discussion with varied perspectives. Afterward, students delve into different charitable activities and discuss personal experiences and motivations associated with them.

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students watch a social campaign video about the importance of giving and identify the various things people often give to others. Then, they practise their critical viewing, and identify and discuss stories (not) mentioned in the video. Subsequently, students express their thoughts on what they watched, discussing its impact and the motivation it provides.

READING ABOUT INFLUENCERS

In the last part of this lesson, students read and revise two texts, so they can identify and change incorrect words in each passage (these also include some of the basic collocations with ‘give’ introduced before). They also participate in discussions related to the influencers mentioned in the texts, exploring popularity, motivations, and opinions on publicized acts of generosity.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the use of basic collocations with ‘give’ and other vocabulary items to discuss acts of giving. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet.
