LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about family and relationships, students talk about family members, friends, and other people close to them. They also watch a video and practise some conjunctions used to give reasons. 

VOCABULARY & SPEAKING

In the warm-up activity, students create eight family members using some prompts in boxes (e.g. …-in-law, step…). They also need to explain who the people are. Then, they discuss some questions about family and relationships. After the discussion, students read eight sentences and choose the correct word in each of them. There are two possible answers in each example. The words and sentences are related to feelings and different types of relationships (e.g. relatives, jealous, appreciate). They are all used in the second part of this lesson about family and relationships. Finally, students choose three statements from the task and need to say whether they are true for them or not and why. 

VIDEO & CONJUNCTIONS

Before watching the video, students list three advantages and three disadvantages of having a family of more than 30 members. Then, they watch the video about a lady who has a hundred great-grandchildren and decide whether the sentences in the task are true or false. They also need to correct the false sentences. After the video, students discuss some questions about what they learned. Then, they look at a useful language box and rewrite some sentences using the words and phrases in bold (e.g. because, that’s why). With this task, students practise using conjunctions and giving reasons. Next, students match sentence halves. The sentences in the task refer to family and friends. In the last task of this lesson about family and relationships, students analyze some statistics about changes in American relationships and discuss some questions related to them. This final task is an opportunity for students to practise giving reasons further.
