LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students learn and practise expressing cause and effect, discover new collocations and discuss problems faced by modern teenagers.

WARM-UP & VERB COLLOCATIONS

The lesson starts with a meme showing different views on what a teenager’s life looks like and a discussion about being a teenager now and in the past. Then, students analyse five sentences and try to guess the meaning of the highlighted verb in each of them (e.g. go through, struggle with). The following task gives them an opportunity to create collocations with the highlighted verbs by matching them with five phrases from a box (e.g. struggle with/anxiety, go through/a crisis). They also have to add other possible words or phrases to make more collocations.

VIDEO & EXPRESSING CAUSE AND EFFECT

Before watching a video about teenagers, students engage in a discussion about problems today’s teenagers might face. They watch the video for the first time and make a list of five problems mentioned by the speakers. Next, they watch the video again and this time focus on completing five phrases with one or two words. The listening practice is followed by a discussion in which students agree or disagree with five statements related to the theme of the video and comment on today’s teenagers’ problems. The last part of the lesson is all about expressing cause and effect. Students analyse a table with sentences expressing cause and effect and complete them with  the correct conjunctions (e.g. due to, therefore, since). Then, they get to practise cause and effect conjunctions further. They look at pairs of sentences and, using a conjunction given in brackets, have to combine them to create five statements about teenagers’ problems. As a final task, students work in pairs and come up with the solutions to the problems, involving parents, teachers and peers.
