LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this beginner lesson on seasons are to:

• talk about habits for different weather and seasons;
• explore collocations for activities in different weather;
• discuss personal experiences and opinions.

Students talk about seasons, weather and leisure activities. They learn and practise collocations (e.g. have a picnic, go swimming, wear a light jacket), discuss what people do in different types of weather and describe seasonal habits in their country using linking words (e.g. and, so, but). Students also work in pairs, read and talk about preferences for seasons and holidays and share their experiences.

WARM-UP AND COLLOCATIONS

This beginner lesson on seasons starts with a warm-up. Students look at a photo of friends having a picnic and say what season or month it could or couldn’t be. They explain why. After that, students complete collocations with verbs (e.g. have a barbecue, have a picnic; go on holiday; go for a walk). They use picture clues. Moving on, students work in pairs. Student A reads items from a card (e.g. a swimsuit, sunglasses, a hotel). Student B guesses the related activity from the previous task (e.g. go swimming, stay near the beach). They then swap roles and continue until no cards are left. Afterwards, students match sentence halves related to leisure activities influenced by weather and seasons. Then, they complete the first part of the statements with their own ideas (e.g. It’s raining. Let’s stay at home and…). Students use different collocations from the previous task.  

DISCUSSION AND READING

In this part of this beginner lesson on seasons, students describe what people in their country usually do or don’t do in each season. They use the target vocabulary from the lesson (e.g. play board games, have a picnic, wear a light jacket) and their own ideas. Students also use linkers (e.g. and, so, because) to make the sentences longer. Afterwards, they discuss questions about personal preferences for seasonal and popular leisure activities. Students then read texts about preferences for seasons and holiday timing. They match the texts with the questions they answer. Following that, students look at the texts again and identify the people who mention different things (e.g. Who talks about playing outside?). Finally, they answer the questions from the previous task (e.g. When do you usually go on holiday?) about themselves.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps using ideas in pictures. They use positive and negative statements. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
