LESSON OVERVIEW

With this lesson plan based on a video about Toyota’s city of the future students learn some useful language for presentations and then practise their presentation skills.

VOCABULARY & VIDEO

The first part of the lesson starts with a quote about a contemporary street which students have to agree or disagree with. The aim of this discussion is to create their interest in the topic of the lesson and is followed by a vocabulary exercise. Students look at a box with adjectives and nouns related to the city (e.g. pedestrian, cosmopolitan, infrastructure) and use them to complete ten definitions. Next, they engage in a discussion about the perfect city of the future and create a list of ‘must have’ and ‘nice to have’ features, focusing on different aspects such as common areas, home interiors, etc. This part of the lesson finishes with a video about the Toyota Woven City which students watch focusing on specific topics (e.g. transportation and buildings). They share their notes and reflections on the city of the future.

 LANGUAGE FOR PRESENTATIONS

In the second part of the lesson students learn the language for presentations. They look at a table with some gapped phrases (e.g. To …… my point,) classified into eight functional categories (e.g. introduction, giving examples, concluding) and complete them with the missing words from a box (e.g.To illustrate my point). Then, they move on to a matching activity in which they see more phrases and have to decide which from the previously mentioned categories they belong to. Finally, students start working on their last task in this lesson, which is giving a mini presentation. They design an outdoor space for their own cities and share their ideas with their classmates using the useful presentation language they’ve learnt.
