Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

In this ESL lesson about photography, students watch an interview with a photographer, learn and practise vocabulary related to photography and have a lot of speaking practice

WARM-UP & VOCABULARY

In the warm-up task of this ESL lesson about photography, students complete three quotes with one word to guess what the topic of the lesson is. They can also say which of the quotes they like most and why. Then, students read five short photo descriptions and complete them with prepositions where necessary (e.g. pose for, keep an eye out, focus on). After that, students look at two famous photos (V-J Day in Times Square and Lunch atop a Skyscraper) and decide which of the statements from the previous exercise describe them best. They can also share what they know about the photographs. Next, students paraphrase sentences about photography using some collocations (e.g. capture the moment, golden hour, genuine emotions). They also need to say whether they agree with the statement and explain why.

VIDEO & SPEAKING

In the second part of this ESL lesson about photography, students look at six photography-related topics, choose one of them and talk about it for two or three minutes. The topics include e.g. trends and styles in photography, as well as photos students themselves took. After that, students watch the video and talk about the photos presented in it using the vocabulary from the lesson. Then, students discuss questions about photography as art. In the final task of this lesson about photography, students look at some controversial photos and share their views regarding the problems they raise.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

Our ESL lesson about photography includes a supplementary vocabulary task to reinforce the language from the lesson. This task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet and can be printed for students or accessed in the e-lesson plan for online teaching. An optional homework assignment is also provided.
