LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- practise the use of adjectives to describe technology,
- compare modern devices,
- listen for specific information,
- respond to information from a text.
Students learn about wearable technologies from two videos and a text. They talk about cutting-edge wearable devices like the Levi’s® jacket, the Ai Pin and smartwatches. Students also get the chance to use adjectives they learn.
ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE TECHNOLOGY
The lesson starts with a warm-up activity. Students look at pictures of four wearable devices (e.g. fitness tracker, VR headset) and say what they are used for. There are also some extra questions about the devices in the teacher’s note. Then, students match halves to create sentences about smartwatches. The sentences contain adjectives to describe technology (e.g. convenient, user-friendly, reliable). Students also choose three sentences which best explain why smartwatches are popular. You can also draw students’ attention to the word stress by doing an activity from the teacher’s note. Next, students talk about some devices using the adjectives.
VIDEOS & DISCUSSION
Students watch the first video (an ad) and finish some statements about the device presented in it. Then, they think about three questions they would like to ask about how the device works. They watch the second video (an interview) and see if their questions were answered. After that, students discuss questions. For instance, they talk about the product from the video, how they would test it and whether they would buy it. They also choose which of the adjectives to describe technology they would use to talk about the device. Next, students read a short text about Ai Pin and create sentences using the adjectives. Finally, students choose an option from a pair and explain their choice. For example, they decide if they would buy the Levi’s jacket or the Ai Pin.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the use of adjectives to describe technology. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
