LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson on third spaces are to:
- read an article about third spaces and discuss the idea;
- analyze third space features and practise relevant vocabulary;
- take a quiz and discuss personal preferences.
With this lesson, students explore third spaces and use vocabulary to describe key benefits (e.g. sense of belonging, being a regular, etc.). They consider different types of third spaces and their features and discuss questions. Students take a quiz to find out their perfect third space and discuss potential threats to third spaces and socializing in general.

ACTIVITIES
This lesson begins with a warm-up in which students reflect on the spaces they frequent each week. Then, students learn relevant phrases to discuss third spaces (e.g. social hub, escape obligations, etc). After that, they use the phrases to talk about important features for them and complete statements about third spaces. They also analyze various third spaces and discuss what they have to offer (e.g. parks, community centres, libraries, etc). Then, students discuss some questions on the subject and share opinions. Following that, students take a quiz to find out their perfect third space and have the option to analyze the results. Students finish the lesson by looking at potential threats to third spaces and socializing (e.g. car-dependent societies, cost of living crisis, climate change, etc).
