LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- read and discuss an article about the pros and cons of online grocery shopping;
- learn vocabulary related to online and offline grocery shopping;
- discuss opinions, consumer preferences, and some niche grocery services.
With this lesson plan on online grocery shopping, students read an article about the advantages and disadvantages of buying groceries online. They discuss their consumer preferences and habits and learn useful vocabulary. They come up with reasons for and against shopping online vs offline and they do a ‘this or that’ exercise about grocery shopping options. They also look at some niche grocery services and discuss questions.

ACTIVITIES
This lesson begins with a warm-up activity. Students think of the last thing they bought online and explain why they bought it on the internet instead of in a real store. In the next exercise, students learn the vocabulary. They look at some statements and find definitions for the bolded words (e.g. discount codes, browse). After that, they read the sentences again and explain if the statement is true for them. If it’s not, they have the option to add details and explain how it’s not true for them. Next, they look at a table which contains reasons to do grocery shopping online and reasons to do it offline. Students then add more ideas to the lists. After that, students do a ‘this or that’ exercise about some grocery shopping options, saying what they’d prefer and why. The lesson finishes with a discussion about some niche online grocery stores (e.g. Too Good To Go) where students can share their opinions about the services and think about other useful stores.
