LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about London students talk about the city, its art and other things it is famous for. Students also learn some phrases, watch a video, have a discussion and do a creative task. 

WARM-UP & VOCABULARY

The lesson starts with a guessing activity. Students read some sentences and try to guess what city they are about. When they know it’s about London, they answer some follow-up questions. After that, students move on to a vocabulary activity. They match the words to the phrases to create collocations (e.g. a bit of a problem, a piece of advice, an item of clothing, etc.). Students also try to brainstorm more collocations with the phrases ‘a bit of’, ‘a piece of’ and ‘an item of’. Students practise using the phrases by correcting the mistakes in the sentences. 

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

This lesson about London also contains a video about a mission a man challenges himself with. Before students watch the video, they look at the sentences from the previous exercise again and try to decide what the mission is. Then, they watch the beginning of the video and check their answer. Students discuss whether the mission will be successful and speculate about other details. After that, they watch the rest of the video and check their answers. They also discuss what they think of the video and of the other missions. It serves as a lead-in to the next activity in which students have to imagine they need to go on a mission (see a member of the British royal family or visit every London Tube station in 16 hours). Students prepare for their mission by making some notes. Then, they work in pairs, exchange their notes, and offer some advice to each other. As a final activity in this lesson about London, students discuss a quote mentioned in the video.
