LESSON OVERVIEW

With this 2-page worksheet, your students will learn 14 common idioms with fruit and veggies. They will discover their meanings from context, create sample conversations with them and see how they can be used in speech. This worksheet can also be used as a filler or warm-up task.

IDIOMS WITH FRUIT AND VEGGIES

First, students learn the meanings of six idioms. They have to read the conversations and for each phrase in bold choose its correct meaning. The task includes idioms such as spill the beans, a hot potato, apples and oranges, etc. Next, students work in pairs. Give them two cards with phrases and their meanings. We prepared additional 8 cards for you to give your students. Their task is to write conversations (similar to those in ex. 1). Then, they read the conversations and the other pair needs to guess the meaning of their idioms. In this part, your students will work on idioms such as to go bananas, small potatoes, as cool as a cucumber, etc.

DISCUSSION

The worksheet ends with a discussion. We prepared eight questions with idioms from this worksheet. You can ask your students to work in pairs again or make all your students participate in an open discussion.
