Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss things that happened in the past;
  • learn and use the rules to form the Past Simple of regular verbs;
  • listen to a recording and read a text about past events.

With this lesson, students briefly review days of the week and months, explore useful verbs and listen to a recording where people talk about things in the past. They study the rules to form the Past Simple of regular verbs, practise them in different contexts and read a text about Susan’s day yesterday. Students also discuss what they and the people they know did yesterday, last week and last month.

WARM-UP AND GRAMMAR

This lesson begins with a warm-up. Students complete gaps with the days of the week and months (e.g. Yesterday was _________.). After that, they look at what five people say about yesterday (e.g. The baby cried so I called the doctor.). They then listen to some sounds and decide who says what. Following that, students find all the verbs in the sentences (e.g. cooked, cleaned, walked) and say what is similar about them. Afterwards, they listen to a recording where people say the sentences from the previous exercise. Students repeat them. Next, they read the rules to form the Past Simple of regular verbs and complete gaps with the examples from the sentences. Moving on, students complete statements with different verbs in the past form (e.g. loved, stopped, studied).

GRAMMAR PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

At this point in the lesson, students read a text about Susan’s day yesterday. Before they do, students look at pictures (e.g. a cake, a tennis racket and a tennis ball, a phone) and guess some things about Susan’s day. Following that, students read the text and check if they were right. They then look at the text again and say two things about each person: one about the present and one about the past (e.g. Susan’s sister – She likes reading. She loved her present.). Finally, students talk about what they and the people they know did yesterday, last week and last month. Students use the Past Simple of regular verbs (e.g. call, email, travel) and add some details.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose a verb to complete sentences. They use the Past Simple form of the verbs and add more information. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
