LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- discuss countries, their capitals and populations;
- read and write short texts about countries;
- revise vocabulary for nature and places and practise high numbers.
With this lesson, students talk about the capital cities of various countries, read short texts describing them and review vocabulary for nature and places (e.g. rainforest, mountain, village). They chat about world places and where they’re located and explore numbers (hundred, thousand and million) to talk about population. Students also play a guessing game in pairs and write a short text about a country they know or like.
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up where students name three countries and their capital cities. Afterwards, they read texts about different countries (e.g. Namibia, Bolivia) and match them with their photos. Moving on, students complete the gaps in the texts from the previous task. They use the correct form of words related to nature and places (e.g. desert, island, pub). Following that, students discuss questions about world places. Next, they look at the texts from the previous exercise again. Students practise high numbers by finding the ones involving aspects of the places. Then, they complete the gaps with names of countries and cities from the texts.
NUMBERS AND WRITING PRACTICE
In this part of the lesson, students complete the gaps with words for numbers (hundred, million, thousand). After that, they write numbers (e.g. 5,400,000). Next, students guess which numbers can be used to answer questions about how many people live in different cities or countries. Afterwards, they practise high numbers by getting a card with some information. Their partner tries to guess it. Students say ‘higher’ if the number is higher and ‘lower’ if the number is lower. Then, they swap places. Finally, students write a short text about a country they know about or like. They include different details.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct words in a text about the UK. They then answer questions about the text. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
