LESSON OVERVIEW
In this lesson inspired by a video about body dysmorphia students revise and practise the different uses of Present Continuous as well as reflect on the influence of beauty filters on teenagers’ lives.
FOUR USES OF PRESENT CONTINUOUS
The lesson starts with a discussion about social media platforms popular with teenagers (such as Instagram and TikTok) and the use of beauty filters. Each question in the discussion represents one of four common uses of Present Continuous (e.g. future arrangement, trend). In the second exercise, students look at the uses and then match them with corresponding sentences. The next task gives them an opportunity to analyse more examples of Present Continuous. Students look at eight sentences and decide which use each of them represents. Finally, they focus on a list of modern trends/movements (e.g. cyber bullying, cancel culture) and talk about them using Present Continuous.
VIDEO & DISCUSSION
The second part of the lesson starts with a short text explaining what body dysmorphia is and is followed by a brief discussion. Students share their opinions and experiences with that syndrome. Before watching the video about body dysmorphia, they look at five gapped phrases related to its content and try to complete them with the missing words (e.g. be bombarded with images, parental consent). After they’ve discussed their meanings, they watch the video and decide which context they’re used in. Next, they move on to listening for details. They watch the video again focusing on five gapped sentences which they have to complete with the missing words. Once the sentences are ready, students identify the uses of Present Continuous, just like they did in the first part of the lesson. Finally, they get an opportunity to agree or disagree with different statements related to the topic.
