LESSON OVERVIEW

This flipped classroom worksheet is about beekeeping in cities and bees’ impact on our lives. The worksheet is based on a TED talk (13-min long) by Noah Wilson-Rich who thinks that urban beekeeping plays a role in revitalizing cities as well as a species.

This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Pre-class activities include a task in which students have to guess the synonyms of the provided words. To make it easier, they have the first letter of each word. After completing the task with their own guesses, they should watch the first part of the video and check their answers by finding right words in the video. Next, they move to a listening comprehension activity. They need to watch the whole video and answer 6 questions. You can check their answer at the beginning of the class or make your students compare and check their answers in pairs.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

First of all, during the class, students need to discuss the speaker’s ideas. They get questions about beekeeping in cities, protection of bees and their own attitude towards urban gardens. These questions should not only check whether they have done their homework, but also engage them further in the topic.

Then, there is a task focusing on animal similes. First, students look at one phrase and its meaning. After studying it, they need to complete other phrases with animals from the box. Finally, there is a practical exercise. Students choose 3 of the animal similes they’ve completed. They work in pairs and tell stories or describe situations and use selected similes.
