LESSON OVERVIEW

The worksheet is built around the word ‘horse’. It includes eight horse idioms which are introduced through various tasks. Your students will discover the meanings of new idioms, see in what context they can be used and practise them in writing. You can use it as a standalone worksheet or homework to teach your students some useful idioms.

IDIOMS

First, students learn just four idioms. They have to choose correct words in the sentences and match the underlined phrases to their meanings. This part includes the following idioms: back the wrong horse, dark horse, get off one’s high horse, flog a dead horse. To practise them, students write one sentence with each idiomatic phrase from the previous exercise. In the second part, students learn other four horse idioms. They select correct responses in the short dialogues. Then, complete the definitions of the underlined idioms (hold your horses, straight from the horse’s mouth, put the cart before the horse, eat like a horse).

WRITING

The worksheet finishes with a writing task. Students read an example of a dialogue with one of the idioms. Then, they write 2 short dialogues, each with one of the idioms from this worksheet. Of course, remind your students to write such dialogues which reflect the meanings of the idioms.
