LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• practise vocabulary for giving directions;
• talk about shopping centres;
• watch a video about a large shopping centre.

With this lesson, students share opinions on shopping centres, learn the names of places and things they might find at the mall (e.g. water park, amusement park, supermarket, etc.) and watch a video about West Edmonton Mall in Canada. They also discuss their experiences related to shopping centres, explore words and phrases for providing directions (e.g. go straight ahead, go up, take a right, etc.) and do a role-play where they give and ask for directions.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This ESL lesson which features vocabulary for giving directions starts with a warm-up. Students say one thing people like and one thing they dislike about shopping centres. Afterwards, they unscramble names of different places and things they might find at the shopping centre (e.g. escalator, minigolf, bowling alley, etc.). Students also use pictures to help them. Then, they read statements about different parts of a shopping centre and match them with their names from the previous task. Next, students complete sentences about a shopping centre they know (e.g. There are shops like…, Apart from shops, there is…, etc.) using the target vocabulary from the lesson and their own ideas. Following that, they watch the first part of a video about West Edmonton Mall in Canada and choose the sentence that is correct according to the video. After that, students watch the second part of the video and tick parts of the mall that the speaker mentions. 

VOCABULARY FOR GIVING DIRECTIONS

At this point in the lesson, students discuss questions about experiences and opinions on large shopping centres. Then, they practise vocabulary for giving directions. Students choose the correct words to complete conversations where people give and understand directions in a shopping centre. After that, they look at a map and complete directions using words in the gaps. Afterwards, students ask for directions to the place the person is looking for. Finally, they work in pairs. Students look at the maps and roleplay the situations in the cards they receive. They take turns giving and asking for directions to find places in a shopping centre.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete directions using words in brackets in the right place in the sentences. Then, they choose one dialogue and draw the map of the route. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students.
