Description

This pre-intermediate conversation worksheet consists of five speaking activities which can be used as fillers or warm-up tasks. The activities are suitable for a group of students, as well as for a one-on-one class

DISCUSSING, ORDERING & CHOOSING BEST ITEMS

In the first activity called ‘Yes, but…’ students have a conversation about provided topics. The rule is that they have to start each response with the words Yes, but… This requires them to listen to their partner and react to what they say. In the second activity of this pre-intermediate conversation worksheet (‘Ordering’), students read a short situation description and have to agree on the best order of things from the list. The worksheet includes four situations for students to discuss. The third activity is called ‘Three items’, and the task is to decide which three items from a list students would need in different situations. Students have to explain why they would choose the items and can’t use an item more than once. The situations include: a walk in the forest, a three-hour train ride, etc. The activity continues until students have used all the items.

GUESSING & DISCUSSION BINGO

The fourth activity in this pre-intermediate conversation worksheet is called ‘Guess my word’. A student chooses an object from a photograph and gives their partner clues as to what the object is. They provide them with as many clues as necessary. Their partner needs to explain precisely which object they think it is (e.g. It is a white spoon next to the slices of ham, with some red food on it.). There are four photographs with a lot of details to choose from. This activity is great for an online class where students can’t simply point to an object. Finally, students play Discussion Bingo. In this activity, each student gets a list of expressions which they need to use in a conversation. Students can choose from five topics of conversation.
