LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this flipped classroom lesson are to:

• understand and practise the use of the structure ‘make + object + adjective’;
• watch and interpret a news story video;
• discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet.

In this lesson, students discuss the effects a pet has on their owner’s life, practise the structure ‘make + object + adjective’ to talk about their personal experiences and watch and interpret a video about pets in the workplace.

This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Before the lesson, students complete the gaps in the texts about pets with the words in the boxes (e.g. active, calm, complicated, exciting, etc.). They also practise their reading comprehension skills by identifying the questions that are answered in the texts.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

In the in-class part of the lesson, students discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet and share their personal experiences. They also review the vocabulary studied in the pre-class activities by completing the gaps with pets (e.g. spider, hamster, rat, fish, etc.) and continuing the sentences with their own ideas. Then, students discuss what they think about having an unusual pet and the animals they would like to have as a pet. After that, they create sentences using the words from four boxes (e.g. My pet makes me active). In such a way students learn to use the structure ‘make + object + adjective’. They find and correct mistakes in sentences, and answer questions about the pictures using the structure ‘make + object + adjective’.

Students also watch a video of a news story about a company that allows dogs in the office. First, they watch the video and explain why the workplace is unusual. Then, they watch it again and identify the ideas that are mentioned. After that, students have a conversation about pets in which they choose statements and comment on them. The lesson is wrapped with a discussion about how pets can change different parts of life in positive and negative ways.

Homework/Revision

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students create sentences that are true for them using the structure ‘make + object + adjective’ and the words in boxes. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
