Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • read an article and discuss different narratives influencing climate change discussions and decisions;
  • revise and practise useful vocabulary.

In this lesson, students discuss various perspectives on climate change, review key vocabulary and analyze different narratives about the topic. They also explore concepts such as climate justice, climate anxiety, and climate fatigue.

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

This lesson starts with a warm-up in which students complete statements and briefly talk about opinions on the amount of discussion about climate change and the thought-provoking nature of the article. After that, they read statements about different perspectives on climate change and find the verbs (e.g. sustain, overestimated, avert) that match the meanings in the task. Students can also do an extra task where they read cards with situations and questions and their partner answers the questions briefly. You can use the task in the class or as a revision task in the next lesson. Then, students match the three narratives from the article with the statements in the previous activity that best describe each of them. Afterwards, they have a conversation by answering questions about their perspectives on climate change narratives, their observations of these narratives in the media and among their social circles, and the challenges and potential benefits of understanding different viewpoints on major global issues. Finally, students read short excerpts about climate justice, climate anxiety and climate fatigue and complete statements about the concept and the phenomena with their ideas and opinions.
