LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about unpaid work, students watch a video, practise using some verbs and discuss care work in depth. 

VOCABULARY & VIDEO

In the warm-up task, students look at three photos and talk about what the people have in common. They also discuss some questions related to invisible labour and unpaid work. Then, students look at some statements and complete gaps to create correct verbs (e.g. penalize, empathize, contribute, clarify). The verbs are used in the video and throughout the lesson. Students also choose two to three statements and discuss if they agree with them. After that, students watch the video for the first time and say why they think it was created. Then, they do the B2 First (FCE)-style multiple choice task. Students look at five questions about the video and need to choose the best answer. During the second viewing of the video, students check whether they were right. 

DISCUSSION

Students look at some statistics about unpaid care work and discuss some questions. For instance, they talk about the message in the video and societal norms and expectations. They also consider the role of education in recognizing the value of unpaid work. Finally, students read about three initiatives whose purpose is to recognize unpaid care work and support caregivers. The texts are about three countries: Rwanda, Sweden and Iceland. Students talk about the texts and consider the outcomes of the initiatives. They also brainstorm other ideas e.g. to reduce caregiver workload and redistribute unpaid work equally. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the use of verbs introduced in the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
