LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students learn to use inversion in English. They also talk about gender inequality, watch a video and read short texts about women pioneers.  

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

The lesson starts with an activity asking students to list famous athletes in different areas. Students also analyse how many of the names are female. If there are more males than females, they need to discuss why it is so. Students also talk about gender equality in professional sports and the Boston Marathon. After that, students watch the video about the first woman to participate in this marathon. Then, they have to complete the sentences based on the information they hear in the video and move on to the second part of the lesson where they learn to use inversion in English. 

GRAMMAR & READING

This part of the lesson is devoted to grammar. Students look at the sentences with and without inversion and answer the questions about them. They also read the rules about using inversion in English. They look at the table with examples and read about the function and the exception. After that, students try to practise inversion by rewriting sentences. Then, they read the biographies of some female pioneers (Marie Skłodowska-Curie, Jane Austen, Katherine Johnson) and say why the underlined sentences are inverted. After reading, students discuss the questions about these women. They talk about their contribution, the price they paid for it and whether they know other female pioneers. At the end of the lesson, students take a look at two statements about gender equality and discuss them. They also have to complete three more statements with their own ideas using inversion.
