Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students practise some language related to breaking and following rules, and discuss the reasons behind cheating in online games.

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

The lesson starts with a discussion about hacks and shortcuts in online games. Students need to explain what each of them is and share their experience with using them when playing games. Students then discuss the differences in meanings of some expressions used when talking about rules and agreements (e.g. bend the rules vs alter the rules, disrupt a contract vs break a contract). After that, they use the information from the article they read before the class as well as their own knowledge to list the reasons why people cheat in online games. Finally, they move on to a short discussion. They need to think about how online cheating influences the cheaters and the players who follow the rules and why cheating in online games is so common.
