LESSON OVERVIEW

In this B1 speaking lesson, students talk about apps. They discuss the most popular applications, but also those that they use on a daily basis. In the second part of the lesson, students watch and discuss two ads for apps.

TALKING ABOUT APPS

The first part of this B1 speaking lesson starts with a warm-up activity in which students need to think of five verbs that often go with the word app. Then, students look at a list of very popular apps, like Facebook, Google Maps or Spotify, and discuss some questions. For instance, they have to say what they like or don’t like about the apps and whether they think the apps have changed the world. In the third speaking activity, students think about two other apps they often use. Once they are ready, they need to say what they use them for, how long they have been using it, etc. This task allows students to have a longer speaking turn. 

TWO ADS & DISCUSSION

The second part of the worksheet starts with a viewing activity. Students watch two short ads for apps and compare them. They also need to answer some discussion questions, for example they have to explain which of the two apps they would be more likely to use. Then, students read about some situations and decide why someone would behave one way or the other (e.g. call a restaurant to order food rather than use a food delivery app). Finally, this B1 speaking lesson ends with seven statements about apps. The statements refer to how useful, distracting or life-changing different apps can be. Students need to decide to what extent they agree with the statements. They have to do that using a provided scale (1 – don’t agree, 3 – completely agree).
