In this Intermediate ESL lesson, students will review indefinite and definite articles, and how to use – or not use – them in oral and written conversation.
Introduction
In the first part of the lesson, the student reads a paragraph and identifies definite and indefinite articles.
Definite vs. indefinite articles
First, the use of the definite article (The) is explained and exemplified. Then, the definite and indefinite articles are contrasted. This is followed by a dialogue which the student completes using the correct articles.
Zero article
The student learns about the contexts in which no article is needed. Then, they put their knowledge into practice by filling in the gaps and completing an email with the correct article or zero article.

The student watches an excerpt from the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic and completes the sentences describing the scene with the correct articles.
Review of articles
In the final part of the lesson, the student completes the review by choosing the correct article option.
