PREVIEW & DISCUSSION
In the first section of this ESL lesson plan on countries and nationalities, students begin by matching countries to foods and identifying nationalities through a simple matching activity. They will then categorize countries by common nationality endings like “-an” or “-ish.” Students will participate in a discussion about their own country’s popular foods and their personal preferences. This introduction helps build familiarity with food-related vocabulary and reinforces nationalities.
VIEWING ACTIVITY
Students proceed to watch a short video where random people on the street are interviewed about which country has the best cuisine, and the results are tallied. After watching, students identify the countries mentioned and the types of cuisine people enjoy, such as Italian or Japanese. They will then tick the correct foods and cuisine names as they hear them in the video. This section helps students practice listening skills and recognition of global foods and nationalities.
DISCUSSION & NATIONALITIES
In this part, students discuss which foods from the video they have tried and which they haven’t. They will brainstorm other famous international dishes not mentioned in the video. Students are then asked about Japanese culture and its associations, as it is highlighted in the video. In the second part, students complete country description templates for people from different nations. This helps them learn vocabulary related to nationalities and typical foods. They also do a short exercise related to the verb “to be” to describe countries.
NATIONAL IDENTITY PROFILE: SHOW-AND-TELL
Students put everything into practice through a “National Identity Profile” activity where they write basic information about their country: the country name, nationality, typical foods, activities, and what their country is known for. They then work with a classmate or teacher to describe their country using phrases provided. In the final step, students ask each other questions about their countries, comparing similarities and differences.
