LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• read an article on how online images alter the way people think;
• revise words and phrases for discussing image creation and bias;
• talk about AI content and bias in online visuals.

With this lesson, students discuss bias in online images and AI-generated content. They review vocabulary from the article they read before the class, explore situations related to image creation and bias and share their thoughts. Students also discuss solutions to reduce image bias and share their perspectives.

ACTIVITIES

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students mention things they remember from the article they read at home. They use words and phrases (e.g. photos of men, occupations, racial and other biases) to help them. Afterwards, students look at some information from the article related to bias in online and AI-generated imagery. They complete gaps with the correct forms of words to discuss image creation and bias (e.g. underrepresentation, reflected, exposure). Following that, students say whether any of the information from the previous task surprised them. They give details. Next, students discuss questions on AI image bias and its implications. Students then look at some ideas to address the issue of biased online images. They categorize them by their priority: high, low, or unnecessary. Students explain their answers.
