LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• discuss luxurious experiences;
• watch a short video and talk about fancy places;
• have a lot of Past Simple and Continuous practice.

The lesson focuses on Past Simple and Past Continuous revision through completing and creating stories. Students also talk about fancy places and experiences, explore vocabulary to talk about the topic (e.g. gold necklace, designer clothes, private jet, etc.) and watch a humorous ad for a ketchup brand with Ed Sheeran. 

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

As a warm-up activity, students look at the photos of different places, describe them and say whether they would like to visit them. After that, they read statements about fancy and modest lifestyles and find phrases (e.g. antique furniture, black limousine, designer handbag, etc.) which are presented in pictures. Next, students complete tasks to practise key vocabulary.

First, they cross out nouns that don’t usually go with certain adjectives (e.g. gold necklace/house/coin/jewellery). Students also add one more suitable noun to each adjective. Then, they read the definitions of ‘posh’ and ‘fancy’ and complete sentences (e.g. People in posh neighbourhoods…) with as many words from the previous task as possible. Finally, they think of one advantage and one disadvantage for different activities (e.g. wearing a designer watch, having antique furniture at home, etc.). 

VIDEO AND GRAMMAR

In this part of the lesson, students watch an ad for Heinz and say why the restaurant in the video is fancy. After that, they match sentence halves to create sentences about the video (e.g. When Ed Sheeran came into the restaurant, classical music was playing). Then, students watch the video again and check their answers. At this point, students move on to Past Simple and Continuous practice. First, they analyse the sentences from the video. Afterwards, they discuss the video and fancy restaurant experiences.

Next, students look at the title of a similar story (The art gallery and the slippers) and say what they think it is about. Then, students have more Past Simple and Continuous practice by completing the story with the correct forms of verbs. Following that, they look at another title and read unfinished sentences. Students complete them to create a story and add extra information to make it interesting. Finally, they choose one title and create a story by following the steps in the task (e.g. Describe the place and say what the people were doing.). 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students write sentences by combining phrases from different boxes. They use Past Simple and Past Continuous. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
