LESSON OVERVIEW

With this lesson plan, your students will talk about success, what they might learn from people they admire and their own experience. What’s more, they will learn a few common English collocations.

COMMON ENGLISH COLLOCATIONS

The worksheet starts with a short discussion. Students have to talk about people they admire and explain why they feel this way about them. Next, they create a few common English collocations by matching words. The list includes collocations such as admire someone from afar, lose confidence, overcome a challenge, take risks, and many more. Then, to practise them a bit, students read some advice from three people and complete the texts using the collocations. After completing the task, students discuss these pieces of advice which are related to work, success and making decisions.

VIDEO & SPEAKING

The lesson plan is based on a short video and is suitable for B1 students as the speaker talks very clearly and slowly. There is only one listening comprehension task. Students watch the video and have to answer a few questions. As the video is just 2 ‐minute long, students can watch it twice. After that, they express their opinion on the advice given in the video and move to a word formation exercise. They have to complete sentences using the correct form of words in bold. They have to build words such as admiration, determination, achievement, confident, etc. Then, they read the sentences again and say which ones they agree and disagree with and why. Finally, the lesson ends with a game in which students take turns to choose a topic and talk about it for two minutes. There are 12 topics to talk about, so plenty to choose from.
