Description

LESSON OVERVIEW

This worksheet focuses on vocabulary connected with activities we can do in the four seasons as well as introduces ‘be going to’ and Present Continuous for intentions and future plans.

VOCABULARY

The worksheet starts with a few exercises on vocabulary, but before handing it out, you can ask students to brainstorm words connected with the four seasons. First, students complete a list of phrases (e.g. have a barbeque, make a bonfire, go camping) with correct verbs. Next, students put the phrases below the seasons when they do them. Of course, depending on where your students are from, they might complete the table differently. They can also add a few more activities that they do in each season. Having collected some vocabulary, students discuss a few questions and move to a short interview with a student through which they will discover the use of ‘be going to’ and Present Continuous for future plans. A quick note: if you want to focus just on the grammar part and summer, you could skip activities on the first page of the worksheet and start with ex. 4.

BE GOING TO & PRESENT CONTINUOUS

This part of the worksheet starts with a guided discovery activity. Students read the interview and answer questions about the structures used in it. This way they discover how and when we can use ‘be going to’ and Present Continuous when we talk about future. Next, they practise the structures by choosing the best option in a few sentences. Before practising the structures in speaking, students are going to watch a short video presenting some students talking about their summer plans.

VIDEO & PRODUCTION

First, students watch the video and listen to the different ways the students in the video say ‘be going to’. Next, they watch the video again and match people to their summers plans. When checking the answers, encourage students to makes sentences with ‘be going to’ and Present Continuous. Finally, students talk about their future plans. They finish a few sentences and then, they can work in pairs to ask each other some follow-up questions. The worksheet ends with a speaking activity. Students work with a partner, choose a card and read the sentence out loud. Their partner has to ask them a question using ‘be going to’ or Present Continuous. They answer the question and then, switch roles.
